The16th of July 2025, Harman Technology officially announced the release ofPhoenix II, a colour negative film ISO 200 in C-41 process, available simultaneously in35 mm (36 exposures)and120.

Harman emphasised that this is a completely new emulsion —each layer, dye, coupling and internal structure have been rethought— to surpass their first version Phoenix 200

Context & technical characteristics

  • Format & sensitivity: Colour negative film ISO 200, available in 35 mm (36 exposures, DX coded cartridges) and 120. Ideally used between EI 100–200. Standard processing: C-41 — but E6 or ECN-2 remain possible for experimental developments
  • New formulation: Phoenix II is a complete redesign. Each photosensitive layer has been rethought with new dyes, coupling and innovative architecture

Improvements over the original (Phoenix 200)

  • Better balanced contrast: less aggressive while providing visual depth and nuanced rendering between shadow and light areas.
  • More controlled grain: graininess is still present — much more pronounced on 35 mm than on 120 — but finer than that of the original Phoenix.
  • Improved sharpness & rendering of highlights: better preservation of details, especially in bright or dark areas.
  • Wider exposure latitudes: more flexibility, even if precise exposure remains essential.

Aesthetic & visual rendering

  • Dynamic & striking colours: high saturation of blues and greens, marked contrasts and immediate visual 'punch' — a true analogue signature.
  • Halation effect: slight blurred reflection around light sources, distinctive analogue visual signature.

“On 16 July 2025, Harman Technology unveiledPhoenix II, a new ISO 200 C-41 colour film, now available in 35 mm and 120. This second generation represents a complete overhaul of the emulsion: finer grain, nuanced contrast, more accurate colour rendering and better exposure latitude. Phoenix II embodies the continuation of a bold innovation strategy that relies on feedback from the photo community.”

Available in our Eshop in 135-36 and 120.
